How to Remove Colour Stains from Clothes

Colour run in the wash can be a nightmare especially when it is your white garments that are stained. Here are some tips to prevent colour runs as well as some useful methods to get rid of colour stains.

Prevention is Better than Cure

Colour run occurs because the dye in your clothes is loose and not colourfast this is further exacerbated when the clothes are washed at high temperature. Therefore, colour run in the wash can be easily avoided by taking note of a couple of things. First, when washing dark and bright clothes, adjust the temperature to a lower setting. Secondly, make sure you read the manufacturer’s tag. If it warns to “wash dark colours separately”, then it would be prudent to follow its instructions carefully. Lastly, always sort your washing by grouping strong colours together and whites in another, washing them separately.

  • Identify and remove the clothing article that is the cause of the colour stain. Rewash the load with good laundry detergent.
  • If rewashing does not fully remove the dye, soak the affected garments in a pail of cold water mixed with a cup of distilled white vinegar. Rewash the load with detergent.
  • Another method you can try is using oxygen bleach. Oxygen bleach reacts with water to produce oxygen bubbles, which are effective at removing stains. Follow the instructions on the product label and test the solution on an inconspicuous area first. After application of oxygen bleach, rinse your clothes with cold water before washing them as per normal.
