]]>Discover the multiple uses of the dishwashing liquid, which can lend so much more help around the house than you think.
A dishwashing liquid functions well on countertops, window sills and other types of surfaces like glass and plastic. Add a small bit of the liquid to a spray bottle filled with warm water, to cleanse away the dirt and grime. Next, wipe over the soapy surface with a well-wrung cloth and allow the surface to dry naturally.
This concoction works very well on outdoor furniture or patio furniture that has been exposed to outdoor dirt and dust. The dishwashing liquid will effectively de-grime any built-in dirt or sticky buildup.
Appliances in the kitchen require regular cleaning, as they are subject to the build-up of sticky grease and stains from cooking. Appliances such as ovens, toasters, blenders, refrigerators and griddles will benefit from the mild and friendly cleansing power of the dishwashing liquid.
Stainless steel cleaners can be very expensive (and harsh if it comes into contact with skin) so using a gentle dishwashing liquid mixed with warm water will polish off stains, fingerprints, and marks leaving your stainless steel appliances sparkling.
Oil-based stains are the hardest to remove, often leaving behind a dark stain or cause discolouration even after soaking. However, dishwashing liquid that is specifically catered to remove grease may work even better than conventional laundry detergents. In fact, dishwashing liquid is especially effective at removing food-based oils, making it a great spot treatment for stained table cloths or couch fabrics.
Dishwashing liquid also tends to be gentle enough on delicate fabrics like silk and wool, which could be easily damaged by laundry detergent due to its more potent chemical composition. The method to go about this is to dissolve around 1 tablespoon of the dishwashing liquid into 2-3 cups of lukewarm water, and carefully dab on the stain with a clean cloth dipped into the mixture. Repeat this until the stain starts to disappear.
Combat residue from hair grooming products like hair wax and mousse with a light solution of a few drops of dishwashing liquid combined with warm water. You can also use dishwashing liquid as a shampoo. For those dealing with greasy tresses, simply apply a coin-sized amount of dishwashing liquid to your hair, lather, then finish by washing with your regular shampoo.
Our jewellery collects dirt with frequent wearing, resulting in dull or cloudy looking accessories. For an easy at-home way to polish jewellery and get it back to its original shine, mix a tiny portion of dishwashing liquid with water and soak the jewellery for 5-10 minutes. If necessary, use a toothbrush to scrub out any stubborn stains.
Fruit flies are attracted to fresh fruit, making them frequent pests in the kitchen. To cut these pesky flies from their food source and protect your family’s food and health, add 3 drops of dishwashing liquid to a bowl of vinegar and place out on the kitchen counter. Fruit flies will become trapped and drown in this solution, preventing any more flies from breeding and attacking your fruit.
Cleaning foggy glasses or sunglasses can be a challenge. Using dishwashing liquid can help to remove any fingerprints, film and vapour leaving your glasses clear to see through.
Rub a drop of dishwashing liquid on the lenses then wipe with a soft cloth without rinsing. The film from the liquid will prevent fog from appearing.
Brake dust and caked-in dirt can be a real challenge to remove from car wheels. However, a mixture of warm water and dishwashing liquid can be applied to remove this dirt easily. Simply scrub away with a scour brush.
A flexible gel ice pack should be in everyone’s freezer to treat aches and sprains when needed. To make your own flexible gel ice pack, mix a cup of dishwashing liquid with 30ml of rubbing alcohol. Pour the mixture into a ziplock bag and freeze.
Squeaky doors can be a nuisance. Before you reach for that grease, try using dishwashing liquid to lubricate door hinges.
Filters can trap a lot of dust, potentially filling your home with pollutants when you turn your air conditioning unit on. To clean air conditioning filters, soak them in warm water mixed with dishwashing liquid and gently scrub with a toothbrush before rinsing dry.
There always seems to be a need for specialty cleaning products, but most jobs can be tackled with just one simple product. Try bio-home Dishwash Liquid – it is 5 times stronger than the average dishwashing liquid, successfully removing tough stains and yet, is gentle on our skin and the environment. Let’s do this the economical and eco-friendly way!

]]>The post 4 Hidden Toxins: What’s Lurking In Your Cleaning Products appeared first on bio-home by Lam Soon.
]]>It’s important to be aware of the hidden chemicals which may reside within your cleaning products in order to protect your family, pets and household. This article will uncover some of the main toxins found in the products you may currently have under the sink and why you should switch to natural products.
This chemical is used for adding fragrance, and because of propriety laws, companies don’t have to disclose what’s in their scents and so you often won’t see ‘phthalates’ on the label.
Phthalates are known as endocrine disruptors, with studies showing that men with higher phthalates compounds in their blood had lower sperm counts. Dishwashing detergents also contain a harmful toxin known as triclosan.
If your dish soap or liquid has the word ‘anti-bacterial’ on it, chances are it contains triclosan. This aggressive antibacterial agent can promote the growth of drug-resistant bacteria and has also been found to be toxic to algae in rivers and streams.
Multipurpose cleaners used for floor cleaning can also contain a chemical known as 2-Butoxyethanol. It is a key ingredient in surface cleaners and is used to give them their characteristic ‘sweet’ scent.
Again, laws don’t require this harmful ingredient to be listed on the product label, despite its risks of respiratory issues such as sore throats, narcosis, pulmonary oedema, and severe liver and kidney damage. It is especially toxic if used in an area that isn’t well-vented.
Ammonia is also a common chemical used to clean households, yet it’s one of the most harmful. Ammonia is a powerful irritant which has been known to cause respiratory issues and lung diseases including bronchitis and asthma. It may also inflict severe skin burns, permanent eye damage and liver and kidney damage. Ammonia is particularly harmful if mixed with bleach since it creates a chloramine gas which can lead to breathing issues.
Commonly found in fabric softener and laundry detergents, QUATS is also an antibiotic-resistant bacteria with links to asthma and contact dermatitis.

Opting for natural cleaning products eliminates the risk of harmful chemicals affecting you and your family. Non-toxic cleaners such as bio-home’s floor cleaner are made using plant-based ingredients that are safe to use. But before you reach for the cleaning product labelled ‘all-natural’ at your local supermarket, be aware that it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s non-toxic.
One past study by TerraChoice Group found that more than 95% of so-called ‘green’ cleaning products contained at least one harmful or toxic ingredient. Switching to a completely non-toxic cleaning product with all active plant-based ingredients listed on the label is your only bet at ensuring that what you’re using is completely safe. Plant-based cleaning products are safe for allergy sufferers and those with sensitive skin, as well as better for the environment.
The Bio-Home difference is that, compared to other household cleaning products, ours is 100% plant-based. Bio-home products are made in biodegradable packaging and do not contain any chemicals or harmful toxins. Bio-home is an environmentally friendly alternative that is as safe for the planet as it is for your family. Whether you’re cleaning the kitchen, scrubbing floors or washing laundry you can always trust that you will get the best clean without the risks.
There is a common misconception that chemical-based cleaners give a deeper clean or work faster and more effectively to kill germs. But plant-based cleaners are proven to work just as well to clean the home and come with a number of advantages. Using plant-based cleaning solutions leads to a healthier home and a safer environment. Switching to greener methods helps reduce pollution to the waterways and the air, minimises climate change and produces less environmental waste.
Brightly coloured bottles promising a quick fix to germs aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. Sure they’ll clean, but at what cost?
Take care of your health and your home by using plant-based products from Bio-Home. Using the bio-home floor cleaner on your home’s surfaces makes cleaning floors easy.

]]>The post How to Refresh Your Home After Someone Has Been Sick appeared first on bio-home by Lam Soon.
]]>To prevent the spread of germs and illnesses, cleaning your home is a must. Here are the best ways to refresh your home after an illness, ensuring you and your family stay healthy.
One of the first things to do if anyone’s been sick in the house is to open up the windows. Letting fresh air in allows old stale air to circulate and ventilate out, replacing sick germy air with fresh air. Fresh air will also help you to feel more energized and focused, which helps if you’ve been feeling all blocked up with a stuffy nose from the cold. Fresh air also helps to improve immunity, refreshing white blood cells which are responsible for fighting germs and bacteria.
In order to kill bacteria and germs, make your own natural disinfectant solution at home using vinegar and water. Simply add 1 part vinegar to 1 part water and add 5-15 drops of essential oil such as tea tree. Take a clean white cloth, dip into the home-made disinfectant solution and apply to the surfaces that need cleaning. Begin by wiping down common gathering areas such as the kitchen bench, table, chairs and barstools, and high-germ areas like the toilet and bathroom sink. When disinfecting, don’t neglect points of contact such as light switches, TV remotes, and doorknobs. For these smaller objects, you can either take a cotton ball or q-tip and dip it into the solution before applying. While there are germs in the house, you want to frequently wipe down the following:
Careful cleaning of your floors will help to stop any germs and bacteria being transferred as people walk through. If you have infants or crawlers, then this step is an absolute must. If a cold or flu has broken out in the household, you want to make sure that the floors are cleaned so that your child doesn’t contract any nasties. The best way to keep your floors disinfected is by using your homemade vinegar solution in a bucket and applying it with a mop. Then, leave the floor to air dry.
In between disinfecting, you should also use a non-toxic natural floor cleaner to keep your floors and surfaces clean and smelling fresh. Pay extra attention to the spaces where your family spends most of their time, such as the bedroom. Regularly cleaning your bedroom floors with a floor cleaner is the safest way to prevent any more germs from transmitting onto your family.
If we’ve been sick with the cold and flu, one of the most common side effects is a blocked and runny nose. Make sure that you and your family dispose of tissues correctly, putting them into the trash as soon as you’ve finished blowing your nose. Otherwise, germs can be quickly transferred upon contact. Invest in a bin with a lid, so that germs and smells can be trapped inside.
Once the bin has become full, dispose of the trash right away in the main rubbish chute. You should clean out your rubbish bin regularly to prevent the spread of bacteria. The best way to do this is to rinse out the plastic rubbish bin with hot water and some washing detergent before scrubbing it out, rinsing it off, and letting it air dry.
If you’ve been sick, chances are you’ve spent a lot of time in your bed. Make sure that once you’re feeling well enough, you change your sheets and bedding and put them in the washing machine to be washed in warm water with detergent. Germs and bacteria easily spread onto our pillowcases and blankets, clinging to the fabric. The same goes for clothes or pyjamas worn during illness. Wash every item straight away to stop the spread of germs. For kids who have been sick, don’t forget to wash their toys and stuffed animals that they’ve been holding onto.
Keeping your household clean with a regular refresh routine will help to prevent the production and spread of the germs and bacteria that cause us to be sick. Always use a Natural Floor Cleaner to clean floors and Multi-Surface Cleaner to clean surfaces, for the health and safety of your beloved family.

]]>The post Cleaning Your Home to Prevent Allergies appeared first on bio-home by Lam Soon.
]]>Sometimes, common household allergens like dust and mould can create an immune response in our bodies; leading to sneezing, coughing, and wheezing. Indoor allergens and even outdoor allergens such as pollen and grass can trigger allergy and asthma symptoms in millions of sufferers. It’s been found that at least six allergens have been detectable in more than 50% of households. These allergens are carried through the air, and can easily be trapped in furniture, curtains, and bedding. To reduce your exposure to household allergens, cleaning on a regular basis is one of the most effective measures to take.
One of the best ways to get rid of allergens is to get rid of dust. This is because dust mites are the most common trigger of asthma and allergy symptoms inside the home. Most of us get rid of dust by dusting with a feather brush or dry cloth. The problem with dusting in this fashion is that it can actually kick up dust particles, exacerbating allergies.
The best way to get rid of dust in a safer manner is by using a damp or treated cloth, allowing dust particles to become trapped in the cloth, rather than being forced back out into the air. While dust is a major allergen, there are other types of allergens found in each room of a house that need to be treated with a thorough clean.
Keeping a clean kitchen should be commonplace, even more so when it comes to allergens. Cockroaches are a common pest in homes and kitchens, and their droppings can trigger allergy symptoms in some people. For this reason, never leave garbage bins or food uncovered, and always wipe down stove tops and countertops after cooking or after any spillages. Use bio-home Kitchen Cleaner and wipe down all surfaces to clean. While cooking or heating the cooking pots, always make sure you turn your exhaust fan on to draw away moisture from the steam. Scrub and towel-dry the sink and tap area daily in order to prevent mould growth.
Organizing and streamlining your pantry can also help to prevent dust particles from settling. Devote a day to emptying out your pantry and cupboards, giving everything a wipe down with a damp cloth before rearranging in a clean and organised manner.
Bedrooms are particularly good at attracting indoor allergens. Since they usually have storage areas with nooks and crannies, as well as bedding, they are susceptible to gathering dust. Allergens such as dust, pet hair/fur, and mould are the common culprits in a bedroom and often set up home in blankets, pillows, and curtains. For this reason, it’s important that you vacuum out the bedroom at least once a week and also wash and change your bedding at least once every two weeks to kill dust mites and their eggs.
If you have pets, don’t let them onto your bed, as they can transfer pet hair/fur as well as pollen and grass from outdoors. It’s also recommended that you change your pillows every five years, and mattresses every ten years.
Just like the bedroom, the living room is an area that attracts a lot of dust. The best way to tackle dust mites and allergens in a living room is by starting from the top and working your way down. Begin by trapping dust on ceiling fans using an old pillow case and sliding one on to each blade. This will capture the dust without allowing it to spread back into the air. Wipe down light fixtures and lamps with a slightly damp microfiber cloth, making sure you switch off the power beforehand. Continue wiping down around windows and tabletops with your damp cloth, getting rid of all settled dust and dirt. Finally, get your vacuum cleaner and vacuum the entire surface of your living room. For allergy sufferers and those with asthma, it’s best to vacuum the house every couple of days to keep your home allergy-free.
In between times, you may also wish to invest in an air purifier. Air purifiers work by filtering out particles in the air; trapping allergens (including smoke) and purifying the air, making it healthier to breathe. You can get smaller purifiers to place in your bedroom or study, and larger units to purify the entire house.
Breathe easier in your home and reduce allergens through regular cleaning and vacuuming. For those seeking to clean regularly using an eco-friendly cleaning product, choose to switch to bio-home. Our cleaning products, including our Multi-Surface Cleaner, are 100% plant-based and kind to sensitive skin. So you can be sure that you’re protecting the health of your home and family from all types of allergens, including harmful residue from chemical-based cleaners.

]]>The post 7 Ways to Keep Your Baby’s Nursery Clean appeared first on bio-home by Lam Soon.
]]>A new study has found that common baby items are dirtier than a pet’s water bowl.
Common baby items were tested and it was found that some toys (bath toys being the worst culprit) contain over 4.3 million colony-forming units per square inch!
Teething toys, sippy cups, wooden toys – they all potentially collect mould. Add that to dust, skin and mites and a child’s nursery can quickly become one of the dirtiest rooms in the house. And as we know, little ones love to share their germs.
Getting into good habits is the best way to keep your child’s nursery clean from dirt and grime. Simple steps can make a big difference.
Before and after play with toys give your child’s hands a wash with gentle soap. The same goes for when they use the bathroom, eat, blow their nose, play outside or cuddle their pet. Teaching kids early to wash their hands regularly will keep them, their room and your home safe.
Alternatively, keep a sanitation station by the door in your baby’s room (make sure it’s out of your baby’s reach). Keep an antibacterial gel and paper towel handy and store a bottle of Bio-home Multi-Surface spray in close reach of the change table. Storing a Multi-Surface spray in your baby’s nursery is a great idea. It means you can give things a wipe over as your baby plays.
Every time you change your baby, give the surface a quick spray of Bio-home Multi-Surface cleaner and wipe it over with a sheet or paper towel. This is especially important for those major poop explosions, or when your baby has vomited.
For ease, it helps if you choose a changing mat that is waterproof.
Once or twice a week, wipe the entire surface down with some water and Bio-home Dishwashing Liquid. If your mat has a removable pad cover, you may want to throw this in the wash too.
Since babies explore the world with their mouths it’s important to sanitise your little one’s favourite toys. We don’t recommend using disinfectant wipes, as these can be confused with baby wipes. Instead, spray toys with Multi-Surface spray and wipe off with a paper towel.
A good nappy disposal system is a must, sealing in odours and waste to keep your child’s nursery germ-free. You should also have a separate hamper for soiled bedding and clothing, too. Soiled items will need to be washed separately in hot water to prevent bacteria from spreading to other clothing and bedding.
To clean your nappy disposal unit, sprinkle bicarbonate soda liberally into the bin, leave overnight and then rinse with water.
Babies smell wonderful…until they pee, poop, vomit or spit up milk. Then their bedding becomes a hotbed for bacteria and odour. Even if bedding appears relatively clean, you should give your baby’s bedding a wash and change at least once a week. Dribble and minor nappy leaks can cause unseen bacteria to grow in your baby’s cot and dust and dirt particles can settle on bedding leading to skin irritation and allergies.
After laundering with Bio-Home Delicate Laundry Detergent, which is specially formulated for baby fabrics, silk, wool and underwear, hang sheets out to dry in the sun. Sunlight acts as a natural disinfectant. Give them a good shake out and rotate the sheets for best results.
Less clutter makes for quicker cleaning so instead of having all your baby’s toys out on display, rotate them by offering five to 10 of them at a time. Not only will this help you keep your baby’s nursery clean, but it will also keep your baby interested in their toys. Too many options and they can become overwhelmed and disengaged.
Before you rotate to the next set of toys, soak plastic, rubber and teething toys in a bowl of hot water with Bio-home Delicate Laundry Detergent. Leave for a few minutes while you mix together distilled white vinegar and warm water and then transfer toys for 15 minutes. Rinse with cool water and store them somewhere dry.
For plush toys, check the label to see if they can be machine washed. If they can, place them in a laundry bag and on a gentle cycle. The silk protein in our Delicate Laundry Detergent provides superior softness and will have your plush toys looking and smelling like new again.
Keeping your little one healthy and safe is so important, particularly when there is the possibility of infections or illnesses. Bio-home wants to help your baby have a happy and healthy time in their nursery, minimising your worries and concerns as a parent.
Conventional cleaning products are full of dangerous chemicals and these common chemical compounds evaporate under normal atmospheric conditions. This compromises indoor air quality and can make your baby sick.
Eco-friendly cleaners are not only better for your baby, but better for the environment, too. This gives your baby the greatest chance to enjoy a beautiful world.

]]>You can protect yourself from many germs by washing your hands regularly, using proper food handling techniques, and cleaning surfaces thoroughly. But prevention in the wrong form can be just as harmful.
While most popular household cleaners will kill germs effectively, some may contain toxic ingredients such as:
In other words, what’s in your cleaning product cupboard can sometimes be just as harmful as the germs you are seeking to get rid of.
Safe cleaning
Cleaning is an essential part of a healthy life and regular cleaning must be performed to ensure your home is safe and germ-free. But it’s crucial that you pay attention to the ingredients in your cleaning products and opt for bio-home products whenever possible. Here’s why…
Bio-Home products are eco-friendly, biodegradable and safe. Made up entirely of plant-based actives, all bio-home products are 100% free of toxic chemicals yet still work effectively to clean the home.
Take our floor cleaner, for example. It’s made from 100% natural renewable plant-derived active ingredients. The formula is rinse-free and quick-drying, making the home safe for babies and pets. The refreshing lemongrass and green tea scent leaves your home smelling clean and inviting. Bio-home floor cleaner is suitable for most floor surfaces, including polished marble and parquet, and gives floors a non-sticky, smooth feel. It’s the perfect example of effective cleaning without the harmful chemicals. It’s even dermatologically tested and suitable for sensitive skin.
Research from the University of Washington analysed six top-selling laundry products and found that all six of them contained at least one toxic or hazardous substance. Scarily, none of these chemicals were listed on the product labels. The New York Times also reported that a popular American detergent contained high levels of a carcinogenic contaminant known as 1,4-Dioxane.
A typical laundry detergent may contain: fragrance, cleaning agents, stabilisers, bleach, 1,4-Dioxane, brighteners, phosphates and EDTA. These substances are bad for the environment as they can damage streams, waterways and ecosystems. As for your personal health, they may cause skin irritation, kidney damage, respiratory issues, and eye and lung irritation. Cleaning agents like petroleum distillates are linked to cancer too.
Bio-home laundry detergent contains non-toxic concentrates so it not only delivers effective washing results but restores the skin’s natural moisture barrier. Its pH-neutral formula is made from 100% plant-based active ingredients and it’s suitable for both top and front loader washing machines. Fragranced with natural essential oils and free from phthalates, the subtle hyacinth and nectarine scent leaves clothes smelling fresh and beautiful. Check out our Natural Laundry Detergent here!
Some bathroom and multi-purpose surface cleaners have been shown to contain 2-Butoxyethanol, which gives them their characteristic sweet smell. These ‘glycol ethers’ known commonly as ‘2-BE’, are poisonous and can enter the body through the skin or through swallowing or inhalation. Headaches, irritated eyes, runny nose, nausea and fatigue are common symptoms of 2-BE exposure. Long term repeated exposure has even been linked to blood disorders such as anemia.
By contrast, our multi-surface cleaner works effectively to remove dirt and grime, but is made entirely of plant-based active ingredients.
If you were to compare each bio-home product with common grocery store cleaners you would be amazed by the difference. Not only are bio-home products effective at keeping your spaces spick and span, but the unique phthalate-free fragrances also make your home refreshed and inviting.
There is a common misconception that chemical-based cleaners give a deeper clean or work faster and more effectively to kill germs. But green cleaners are proven to work just as well to clean the home and come with a number of advantages. Using green cleaning solutions leads to a healthier home and a safer environment. Switching to greener methods helps reduce pollution to the waterways and the air, minimises climate change and produces less environmental waste.

]]>Kitchen and Bathroom Cleaner: Mix ¼ cup of liquid detergent with around 15-18 litres of water. Load a spray bottle with the solution and store the rest in a bucket to be used as refills. The detergent can absorb grease and can be applied on kitchen appliances, counter, stove, sinks, floors, bathrooms and more.
Natural Pest Repeller: Living in Singapore, or in most parts of South East Asia, means having to deal with unpleasant bugs and insects. Good news is that these creatures are repelled by soap in general. Your more dilute laundry solution (from point 1) can deter them if you spray them on the windows, floorboard, the cracks in the walls of your house – spots and corners in which they tend to appear. Keep these pests away from your potted plants by spraying the solution on the underside of the leaves.
Stain Remover: If there is an old stain on a piece of rug, carpet or furniture, mix a teaspoon of liquid laundry detergent with an average-sized cup of water. Transfer the concentrated solution into a spray bottle and spray at the specific spot. Wait a couple of minutes, let the solution seep through, and use an old toothbrush to remove the stain, followed by vacuuming away what is left.
Toys Cleaner: Knowing how children are, they can quickly change a new toy into a dirty mess. There are germs and strong chemicals that come into close contact with their skin, and at times, It is hence important to frequently wash their toys to avoid contamination due to poor hygiene. We can either use the same all-purpose spray, or wash the toys all at one go by soaking them into a basin or bathtub of warm water and adding half a cup of liquid laundry detergent. Allow the toys to soak, before rinsing and drying them thoroughly.
Weed and Moss Killer: Sprinkle some powdered detergent on the random moss and weeds that grow in the cracks of the walls of your home, in the driveway, wherever. You will notice that these wild plants will turn brown and wilt away, and you can sweep them away.
Bio-Home’s Laundry detergent is definitely your best tool for the purposes mentioned. It’s all about how we use our current household cleaning tools to make our lives simpler, easier and more effective than ever. Bio-home’s delicate laundry detergent is ideal for more delicate items of clothing with specially formulated biodegradable ingredients.
